Blood pressure is the measurement of the arteries' ability to relax and contract during the pumping of the heart. Basically, this is a very simple stress test for your heart. If you have high blood pressure, the best remedy is exercise. Work with a qualified professional along with your doctor. After about 4 weeks of consistent exercising (in ANY form), your BP and heart rate should be lower. (Isn't this something your doctor already told you? if not, then get a different doctor!)

If, after working out on a consistent basis, you are within your proper weight range for your age and BMI, and you still have high blood pressure, then you can look into herbal remedies to assist you. In some cases, high blood pressure is hereditary, but most is caused by poor diet and lifestyle habits. At 30 years of age, you are young enough to change that before the rest of your internal organs are damaged by the high bp.

BTW, adding herbals to your dietary intake without adding exercise won't do a thing for the bp.

And magnesium is extremely important to the heart function along with blood pressure.

There are lots of herbs that can be used to lower blood pressure. I think it's best if you go to a Naturopath or herbalist for this so I wont list them here, just letting you know herbs can be helpful.

Weightloss (if you are overweight), stress reduction techniques, reducing salt if you have sodium dependant hypertension.

Get plenty of calcium and magnesium. Calcium is particularly helpful with sodium dependant hypertension. Essential fatty acids - this is what you get from fish oil. You can also get your omega 3 EFA's from flaxseed oil and there are algae derived EPA and DHA supplements available now.

If you have alcohol and/or caffeine, do so in moderation as these can also cause/contribute to hypertension.

If you have secondary hypertension treat the disease causing it. Most cases of HBP are primary.

The answerer below failed to mention possible contraindications for any of her recommendations so I'd just like to ensure that you do your research before taking any herbs or supplements. For example arginine can provoke or worsen herpes outbreaks so if you have an issue with coldsores it is best to avoid this supplement. Fenugreek is contraindicated during pregnancy (obviously not a problem if you're a man). Ginkgo is to be used with caution with anti-coagulant therapy. Most herbalists would recommend patient's cease therapy with ginkgo prior to surgery. While not dangerous, many of the herbs recommended below are heating and would not be suitable for a person with a hot constitution (this does make a difference clinically, a big one actually) hence my recommendation that you seek advice from a herbalist or naturopath with regards to herbs. It is also important to note that blood pressure needs to be lowered gradually, not suddenly, as your kidneys adjust to a higher blood pressure. For this reason it would be best if your blood pressure was monitored by a qualified health professional. This will also give you an indication as to whether the therapy is working. It is also really important that you get help with identifying any personal factors contributing to your HPB which no one can do effectively over the internet.

Also very important to note is that hypertension is NOT always caused by excessive fluid in the body. Chronic dehydration is a very common cause of hypertension. This is why patients can get worse when they take diuretics. So make sure you are drinking plenty of water.
